For whom English pays off in Japan

Guided by Bourdieu's concept of capital, this presentation discusses highly localized perceptions of English proficiency in EFL, based on the data from the Japanese General Social Surveys. The analysis indicates differential effects of the socioeconomic variables on the appreciation of English proficiency between Japanese male and female.
